The imagery of the car speeding uphill, combined with the idea of gravity-defying capabilities makes the 1960 Corvette very appealing. That&#8217;s what this ad tries to convince you will be true if you commute by Corvette! Its image of a happy couple in a red convertible cruising through the hills of San Francisco evokes feelings of freedom combined with excitement. The writing mentions a few of the technical aspects of the car, but what it really sells is the feeling of getting behind the wheel of your own Corvette.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/autohistorian\/5024254766\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photo Source<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"clear: both;\">Excitement is Standard Equipment<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-2excitement.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-108\" title=\"Excitement is Standard Equipment\" src=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-2excitement-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Excitement is Standard Equipment\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-2excitement-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-2excitement.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>Excitement is &#8220;standard equipment&#8221; for the Corvette, even in 1961, as this ad tells us. The car partially obscured by the white convertible Corvette is a 1927 Bugatti, a French automobile also known for excitement. But the ad goes on not to compare the two cars, but to CONTRAST them, telling how the newer Corvette is built with the comfort of driver and passenger in mind. It doesn&#8217;t require cat-like reflexes or professional experience to drive; it&#8217;s a sports car every American can enjoy&#8230;with excitement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/autohistorian\/5024272724\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photo Source<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"clear: both;\">You Only Think You&#8217;re Not an Enthusiast<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-3enthusiast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-109\" title=\"You Only Think You're Not an Enthusiast\" src=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-3enthusiast-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"You Only Think You're Not an Enthusiast\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-3enthusiast-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.volvette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1961-3enthusiast.jpg 458w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>Chevrolet wanted to make sure people knew they didn&#8217;t have to be an enthusiast to enjoy a Corvette. It&#8217;s a car for people who drive every day, not just those who join weekend car parades and make small talk about engine capacity. The best part of the copy is the line <em>&#8220;Unless you&#8217;re accustomed to driving sports cars in the ten to fifteen thousand dollar category, you&#8217;ll be absolutely astonished.&#8221; <\/em>My how the economy has changed! The car had been seen in an episode of the TV show <em>Route 66<\/em> in the fall of 1961, so it was familiar to some of the advertisement&#8217;s audience. This one features the famous split rear window Corvette coupe in the background behind a white Chevrolet Corvair, a mass-produced compact car that featured a few elements from the popular Corvette, that had debuted in 1960. Copy at the top of the page describes the Corvette, while the text at the bottom refers to the Corvair.
